The World Meteorological Organization (WMO), a UN organisation with a base in Geneva, has stated that weather- and climate-related disasters have cost billions of dollars this year and affected millions of people. It calls these effects “tell-tale symptoms and impacts” of increased climate change.

The organisation argued for improved climate change adaptation, including universal access to early warnings, saying that the need to do far more to reduce greenhouse gas emissions was once again highlighted throughout events in 2022.

WMO chief Petteri Taalas stated in a statement that “this year we have faced numerous devastating weather disasters which claimed far too many lives and livelihoods and compromised health, food, energy and water security and infrastructure.”

In Pakistan, severe flooding brought on by record-breaking rain in July and August resulted in more than 1,700 fatalities, 7.9 million displaced residents, and 33 million people affected.

According to Taalas, “one third of Pakistan was flooded, with significant economic damage and human casualties.”

Although global temperature data for 2022 won’t be available until mid-January, according to WMO, the last eight years are on course to be the eight warmest on record.
