LAHORE: Lahore, the most polluted city during smog season, has championed recycling the increasing solid waste generated in the walled city, allowing young innovators and nascent start-ups to harness the untapped treasure for environmentally friendly solutions.

Many companies are making significant strides toward turning recyclable trash into useful green products.

We recycle plastic to construct furniture, shelves, and even temporary restrooms. “Our products are used not only domestically, but also exported,” said Bilal Ahmed, the business head of a recycling initiative.

“We also produce manhole covers from plastic waste, and to date we have installed 350 in Lahore,” he added.

Additionally, for Rs100 per kg, the company offers six-layer wood pulp recovered from tetra pack, which consists of four plastic layers, one aluminum layer, and one paper layer.

The project’s machinery used to be imported from places like Germany, China, and Taiwan, but now we’re making an effort to increase indigenization.

In addition, he said, “we do not use any chemical during processing and segregation of plastics for recycling, so you can rest assured that our products are safe for the environment.”

In addition to making non-concrete and water-, snow-, and pest-resistant washrooms and kitchens, Ahmed said his company also manufactured staple fiber from plastic bottles.

450 tons of plastic garbage and 100 tons of packaging can be recycled by a single company.

Due to the sector’s underappreciation, the Institute of Urbanism (IoU) and Heinrich Böll Stiftung visited the Mahmood Booti and Lakhodair landfills and recycling facilities to give decision-makers first-hand information regarding garbage collection, landfill sites, and recycling.

Another industry leader in plastic bottle recycling and the production of regenerated, recycled, and carded polyester fibre from PET bottles recently announced that it had recycled over 18,000 metric tons of bottles in the previous year.

Besides being able to produce 55 metric tons of polyester fiber each day, “our company prepares 32 products from PET bottles,” he said.
