Islamabad bridge pillar fall leaves at least two people dead.
When the pillar collapsed during construction, there were at least three recorded injuries.
A pillar of a bridge that was still being built collapsed on Saturday, killing two employees and injuring three others in Islamabad’s Bhara Kahu neighborhood.
Sources claim that the bridge’s construction was still ongoing when the pillar collapsed. The personnel who are buried beneath the debris are being evacuated.
Two workers were rushed to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), where one of them died from injuries, according to a tweet from the Islamabad Police. A further worker died from his injuries while being treated at Polyclinic Hospital together with three other workers.
Top officials, including the Chief Commissioner and Inspector General of Islamabad, arrived at the scene of the accident.
Further, the Islamabad Police said that a committee headed by the Islamabad deputy commissioner has been formed to “investigate all aspects related to the incident”.
According to sources, the team will submit a detailed report regarding the incident within 24 hours.
The Capital Development Authority (CDA) Chairman said that a truck loaded with straw hit two pillars of the bridge. After the accident, work on the second pillar was stopped.
Earlier in the day, the police took to Twitter to inform citizens of the incident, saying that “heavy police force and other agencies are engaged in relief activities” for the affected workers.
People were requested to “avoid going towards Bhara Khau” so that rescue and relief operations are not hindered.
