PESHAWAR: The Pakhtunkhwa administration made the decision on Monday to file a Supreme Court appeal against the Peshawar High Court’s (PHC) ruling to call a provincial Assembly session and appoint members to the reserved seats, as designated by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).

Through a circular summary, the provincial cabinet gave its approval to the government decision. The government has opted not to hold a provincial assembly session until after the Supreme Court’s ruling. In a day or two, the appeal is anticipated to be filed with the highest court.

The provincial government asserted that it was legally entitled to the reserved seats that the ECP had given to the opposition parties. The opposition sought the PHC due to the delay in taking the oath of office for the MPs on the seats reserved for women and minorities.

In support of the opposition, the PHC issued an order to the speaker of the province assembly to call a meeting so that the legislators might take an oath of office. Still, no meeting was called. The ECP decided not to hold the Senate elections in the K-P Assembly earlier this month due to the oath issue.
