In Karachi, the PPP is in the lead. LG surveys
According to unofficial results, the Peoples Party won the majority of UC seats in the entire province of Sindh, defeating the PTI and JI in the process.
Karachi held by-elections on Monday for 63 local body seats in five divisions of Sindh, and preliminary results revealed the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) was on the rise.
Radio Pakistan reports that the PPP won the most votes in the province’s LB by-election. Seven of Karachi’s 11 union committees (UC) went to the ruling PPP, while four went to the opposition Jamat-e-Islami (JI).
In addition, the PPP won a majority of the vote in every single district of Sindh where the by-elections were conducted, and they also won four of Hyderabad’s UCs.
Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, chairman of the PPP and foreign minister, expressed his appreciation for the party’s electoral win, saying, “once again people reposed their faith in the PPP, from Karachi to Kashmore.”
In a statement released on the PPP’s official Twitter feed, he stated, “It is a historic achievement that all district chairmen, including Karachi and Hyderabad, are from our party.”
The minister claimed that the support of the people, the deaths of the party’s leaders, and the efforts of the courageous were all responsible for the party’s victory. He went on to say that PPP employees had taken on more responsibility, and that their aim was to serve everyone equally.
Reminding the elected officials that there is a house of supporters of the martyred Benazir Bhutto on every street, he urged them to include every street and neighbourhood in the development process.
Bilawal asked the newly elected PPP officials to elevate public service to a higher level and to uphold higher moral principles.
Murtaza Wahab, leader of the PPP, congratulated Karachi residents for “rejecting politics of hate, divide, and protest” in favour of “choosing Bilawal’s narrative of working together in a cohesive manner.”
Thank you, my beloved #Karachi, for voting for Bilawal and his message of unity above the politics of division and protest. Hopefully, the PPP will not disappoint the people of Karachi and would provide for each and every one of them.
The PTI and JI have accused the PPP of electoral fraud.
The PPP has been accused of rigging in the local bodies by-elections held yesterday in Sindh by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and the JI.
Aftab Siddiqui, president of the PTI in Karachi, has pledged that the party will bring up allegations of vote manipulation in any and all available venues.
At a press conference in Karachi, he stated that the door to polling station no. 2 in Korangi had been broken down. He further claimed that in UC-6 in Nazimabad, a youngster under the age of 18 had registered to vote.
Siddiqui added that the PPP did poorly but still received many votes in New Karachi. He said that 400 ballots were confiscated after being brought in from the street.
Separately, JI Karachi chairman Engr Hafiz Naeemur Rehman alleged that his party’s workers were assaulted by members of the ruling PPP all throughout election day.
“They [JI workers] were tortured, and efforts were made to expel the polling agent, but our workers fought hard,” he continued.
Polling
On Sunday, voters in 24 of Sindh’s districts, including Karachi, went to the polls for local body (LB) by-elections.
Without a break, voters cast their ballots from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
