There will be by-elections for the mayor of Karachi today. JI
calls for the use of rangers and military personnel to guarantee free and fair elections.

Engineer Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman, chief of the Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) in Karachi, has urged citizens to vote in by-elections for local bodies on Sunday (today), as they did on January 15.
He said that the remaining union councils’ LG elections today would determine who would become mayor of Karachi.
At a press conference at the JI Karachi headquarters, Rehman said he would once again like to see the army and the Sindh Rangers stationed permanently at voting places to keep things running smoothly and prevent any untoward incidents.
Additionally, he asked that close-circuit cameras be installed at polling places by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).
He cited rumours that the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) had sent officers to the district west to help rig the election by casting fraudulent ballots in the party’s favour.
He went on to explain that JI personnel will be stationed at voting places to provide vigorous opposition to any attempts by the PPP government in Sindh to use undemocratic tactics to influence the election or its outcome.
“The PPP government in Sindh will be held responsible for the situation which may emerge in the aftermath of rigging attempt,” the JI leader said.
He also called for the use of the army and the Rangers to guarantee a polling failure.
