ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Imran Khan’s “Jail Bharo” movement is allegedly a plot against the nation, according to information minister Marriyum Aurangzeb.

The minister claimed during a news conference that the former premier’s “thefts and robberies” were harming the less fortunate sections of society.

Marriyum stated that Imran was avoiding charges before several agencies, such as the National Accountability Bureau (NAB), the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), and district courts because he had no answers.

She claimed that “he has developed a new conspiracy in the form of the Jail Bharo movement after multiple failed schemes in the previous nine months,” adding that the movement ought to be known as Jail Bacho (save from incarceration).

She referred to the action as a “drama” and questioned why 200 innocent people were being detained when Imran Khan was being called in and PTI leaders were being questioned about the Toshakhana (gift depository) issue and the cypher conspiracy.

She emphasised that Imran needed to provide answers and said, “These are criminal arrests, not political arrests.

“Nawaz Sharif was imprisoned beside his kids. She remarked, “You [Imran] stay in your Zaman Park bunker with your children wandering around Britain. Why should others go to jail while the ‘criminal’ is lounging in his house?

She maintained that the Jail Bharo movement was a plot against the nation rather than being for the people.

She questioned, “If you sympathised with the country, why did you wreck foreign ties and raise the price of gasoline, LNG, sugar, and bread throughout your tenure?

Marriyum added that Imran had previously referred to Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi, the head of the PML-Q, as the “greatest dacoit in the country,” but was now endorsing him and praising him for taking over the party.

She claimed that Imran claimed there was no plot after he was ousted but afterwards claimed there was a foreign conspiracy.

“He left after stuffing his pockets during his time. He coerced ministers, the speaker of the National Assembly, and the president into acting in an unlawful manner following the constitutional vote of no confidence against him, she said.

The information minister went on to say that when the court called him, he ordered his followers to flood the Lahore High Court (LHC), leading people astray and criticising the judiciary.

She said, “He won’t stop.”

The minister claimed that Imran’s detention should mark the start of the “Jail Bharo” “play” after he “robbed and destroyed the country” but provided no explanations.

She continued, “That’s why he’s beginning this movement.

The “performance,” according to Marriyum, needed to end.

The launch of the party’s Prison Bharo Tehreek, an initiative to seek arrests in an effort to register its protest against the present government’s “assault” on fundamental rights and the economic “meltdown,” was officially declared by Imran Khan on Wednesday.

The former premier explained two factors that led to the protest movement on Twitter: “One, it is a peaceful, non-violent protest against the onslaught on our constitutionally protected fundamental rights […] In addition, it fights against the financial collapse brought on by a cabal of thieves who have obtained NROs for themselves while crushing the populace, particularly the poor and middle class, under the weight of spiralling inflation and mounting unemployment.
