ISLAMABAD: While the coalition government battles the judiciary following the Supreme Court’s (SC) Punjab elections judgment, the National Security Council (NSC), the highest venue to debate matters of national concern, is convening today under the leadership of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

The committee will assess the country’s internal and foreign law and order condition.

The conference will feature a briefing on national security from the leaders of security institutions, according to sources.

According to reports, the meeting would include participation from Ministers of Interior Affairs Rana Sanaullah, Foreign Affairs Hina Rabbani Khar, Finance Ishaq Dar, Defense Khawaja Asif, and Information and Broadcasting Marriyum Aurangzeb.

Chiefs of the Pakistan Air Force and Navy, as well as the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee, are also taking part, along with the chief ministers of Sindh and K-P.

Federal Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarar, along with other leaders including Khalid Maqbool, Aslam Bhutani, Khalid Magsi, and Khurram Dastgir, attended a meeting of parliamentary leaders earlier.

The high-powered meeting hasn’t received any formal announcements to far.

But according to reports, the gathering will assess the “present scenario,” particularly in light of the Supreme Court’s decision ordering the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to hold polls in Punjab on May 14.

On the other side, Imran Khan, a former prime minister and the leader of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), asserts that the PDM coalition government scheduled the NSC meeting in an effort to delay elections under the guise of national security.
