Officers who used their batons during the confrontation Participants in the Aurat March were suspended: Pakistan Minister of Climate Change Senator Sherry Rehman has issued a strong condemnation of the incident that occurred in Islamabad and has requested an investigation.
ISLAMABAD: According to Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah, police officers who baton-charged Aurat March (Women’s Day March) participants in Islamabad have been suspended.
Additionally, he added, “Other individuals accountable for misbehavior are also being identified, and appropriate action will be done against them too.
Politicians and activists alike have expressed shock and condemnation over the occurrence.
Sanaullah earlier claimed to have taken serious notice of the behavior and to have called the Islamabad IG Police in a statement on his Twitter account. He stated that individuals accountable for the mistreatment of the women’s march participants would face stern judicial action.
Senator Sherry Rehman, the minister for climate change, also expressed her displeasure and called for an investigation into the incident. “This is not acceptable. Also on International Women’s Day. This is not what we fought for and will not tolerate it, “She posted something on Twitter.
Rehman previously tweeted that the marchers were justified in being unhappy and that the police had no business arresting a tiny, peaceful procession. “Not progressive women, but the ladies carrying laathis, need to be driven back. It is sad to watch this occur. I’ll look for a question, “She continued.
Videos depict a combative encounter between march participants and Superintendent of Police (SP) Nausherwan.
Director Inspector General (DIG) Operations Shahzad Nadeem Bukhari quickly traveled there after the incident.
As they were prevented from holding the rally outside the press club in the federal capital, the marchers started chanting anti-Islamabad police chants.
The Islamabad Press Club was difficult for women and other march participants to access since all roads leading there were blocked by barbed wire and canters.
The women rose to remove the barbed wire themselves and there were heated arguments with police officers outside the club.
The women put up banners and cards advocating women’s rights while chanting that they too had the right to demonstrate.
The Islamabad High Court (IHC) earlier today dismissed a petition submitted by Muhammad Faiq Shah, the leader of the Amun Taraqqi Party (ATP), which contested the approval given to the Aurat March organizers to hold the protest at F-9 Park.
After hearing the arguments put out by the petitioner’s attorney, IHC Chief Judge Aamer Farooq declared the plea to be unmaintainable.
The National Commission on Status of Women was allegedly given permission to stage the march at F-9 Park by Islamabad Deputy Commissioner (DC) Irfan Nawaz Memon, according to the plea.
It demanded that the DC cancel its approval and provide the organizers specific instructions not to flout Islamic law or the Islamic way of life while staging the Aurat March.
Prior to this, the Lahore High Court (LHC) had granted permission for the march to take place on March 8 in honor of International Women’s Day.
The march could take place between 1:30 and 6 o’clock from the NADRA headquarters in Shimla Pahari to Faletti’s hotel, according to Justice Anwaar Hussain.
Judge Hussain commanded the Aurat March organizers to meet with the deputy commissioner (DC) Lahore and choose a location for the event during the proceedings on Wednesday.
Before to this, the LHC had summoned the deputy commissioner and the superintendent of police (SP) security of the province capital on Tuesday in response to a complaint contesting the DC’s order denying permission for the Aurat March to take place on March 8.
The Lahore DC, the Punjab government through its chief secretary, the capital city police officer (CCPO), and the National Commission for Human Rights through its Punjab member were designated respondents in the petition brought by petitioners Khawar Mumtaz, Leena Ghani, and Hiba Akbar.
