ISLAMABAD:
A source within the Ministry of Health has confirmed that the polio virus was discovered in sewage samples collected from Peshawar and Faisalabad.

Peshawar and Faisalabad both have WPV1 in their municipal sewage systems. In Faisalabad, the sewage from three different pumping stations has been found to have the polio virus. According to the sources, samples for the polio test were collected from Peshawar and Faisalabad on November 11, and the results of the test were confirmed later.

Polio has been found to be present in 34 environmental samples throughout the course of this year, with 22 of those samples coming from K-P and 9 from Punjab.

This year, there was one case of polio reported in Sindh and one in Islamabad.

The previous year saw the discovery of 65 polio sewage samples around the nation. At this time, the anti-polio programme has 84 environmental sites, but that number is expected to rise to 100 by the time the programme is finished in 2023.

To this point in the year, there have been a total of twenty confirmed cases of polio, seventeen of which have been reported from North Waziristan, one from South Waziristan, and two from Lakki Marwat.
