PESHAWAR: The Peshawar High Court (PHC) judge stated on Thursday that the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) legislators believe the resignation procedure for the National Assembly is “child’s play” because they now desire to return to the lower chamber.

The comments were delivered by Judge Ejaz Anwar during a hearing on petitions opposing the acceptance of PTI members of the NA’s resignations.

Judge Muhammad Ibrahim Khan questioned why the former MPs resigned if they now wanted to return to the assembly as the proceedings got underway.

The attorney responded by saying that the resignations were in protest of Imran Khan’s dismissal as premier.

The PTI members “believe that this is child’s play, formerly they used to insist that the resignations should be accepted,” Judge Anwar said, amused by the response. They used to make a parade to the speaker, and now they want to go back to the NA.

Moreover, the attorney for the former ruling party asked the court to put off by-elections that were set for March 16.

Judge Anwar announced that another bench will hear the case on March 3 as he has been nominated as the judge of the Election Tribunal (tomorrow).

Since July 2022, the resignations of the PTI MNAs have been approved in four stages: 11 in the first, 35 in each \the second and third, and 43 in the fourth.

In April of last year, Imran Khan was removed as prime minister by a vote of confidence, prompting the members to resign from the lower house of parliament in protest.

The resignation notifications of three PTI legislators had been suspended by the Islamabad High Court (IHC) a day earlier, preventing the ECP from holding by-elections to fill their seats.
