While speaking at a ceremony in Islamabad honoring the country’s dead on Thursday, Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Asim Munir called the events of May 9 “very sad and condemnable.”

On the occasion of ‘Youm-e-Takreem Shuhada-e-Pakistan’ (Pakistan Martyrs Day), Gen. Munir paid a visit to Police Lines in Islamabad.

Dr. Akbar Nasir Khan, the Inspector General of Police in Islamabad, greeted him as he arrived.

As the relatives of police and military dead were present, the army chief vowed that “the nation will neither forgive nor forget those who desecrated the memorials of martyrs and undermined their dignity.”

The COAS restated his previous position on the issue, saying, “such behavior will not be tolerated.”

“Nothing can erase the blood of the martyrs who were granted eternal life by Allah Almighty,” he continued.

The Pakistani military, police, and other law enforcement organizations are unwavering in their commitment to upholding the honor of the country at whatever cost to themselves.

“I want to convey this message to the heirs of the martyrs of all law enforcement agencies that today the people of Pakistan and the Pakistan Army stand and will continue to stand with them,” he continued.

Previously, General Munir had condemned as “intolerable” a recent wave of attacks on military facilities, memorials, and sanctuaries of martyrs.

“Firm action will be taken against those who are responsible for such acts, as the army is committed to safeguarding national security,” General Asim said at an award ceremony honoring the sacrifices and service of martyrs and ghazis at the GHQ.

The arrest of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Chairman Imran Khan on May 9 sparked violent rallies across the country. After it, hundreds of protestors were arrested and sent before military tribunals.
