ISLAMABAD:
In the controversial Twitter case filed by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) last year, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader and former federal minister Azam Swati was proclaimed an offender on Monday by a special court in Islamabad.

The Central Islamabad Special Judge, Shahrukh Arjumand, issued an arrest warrant for Swati and demanded his immediate arrest and production.

The FIA had previously asked the same special court to issue an arrest warrant without bail for the PTI leader back in May.

After Swati failed to show up in court to face indictment for his inflammatory remarks, the court issued the warrants. In court, Swati’s attorney stated that he had been unable to reach his client.

A non-bailable arrest warrant was requested by Special Prosecutor Rizwan Abbasi, but the defence attorney argued that the law governing such requests “is very different” and hence could not be applied to the situation with Swati.

The FIA’s attorney then informed the judge that Swati had not voluntarily been in court. The warrants for Swati’s arrest were eventually issued by the court.
