A day after his arrest in an alleged corruption case, ISLAMABAD-based Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Asad Qaiser was transferred to Adiala jail on judicial remand on Saturday.

Judicial Magistrate Qudratullah had police bring Qaiser before the president of the local court.

The Anti-Corruption Establishment (ACE) requested Qaiser’s arrest in connection with a corruption case in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and the court was informed of the arrest.

Qaiser’s attorney, Shoaib Shaheen, argued that the capital police overstepped their bounds and acted with “undue haste” in making the arrest.

He claimed that the arrest of the PTI leader was motivated by political vendetta and that it was suspiciously timed after the announcement of the election schedule.

The attorney also said he would seek protective bail for his client.

The court, however, has ruled against any protection bail being granted at this time. Meanwhile, the court approved Qaiser’s request for judicial remand and gave the K-P police one week to complete the necessary legal procedures.

Qaiser was detained at his home in Banigala by a joint task group of Anti-Corruption Establishment K-P and Islamabad police. After his capture, Qaiser was taken somewhere secret.

Anti-Corruption Establishment (ACE) K-P and Islamabad police raided the Banigala home of the PTI leader and took him into custody. After his capture, he was taken to a secret location.

The Central Media Department of the PTI issued a statement condemning the arrest of Qaisar, calling it a “shameful” move that came at the same time as the announcement of the election date.

The party said that the arrest of Qaisar cast doubt on the integrity of the voting process.
