Thousands of residents along the River Sutlej in Lahore and Bahawalnagar were evacuated to higher ground following a report of the worst surge of water in the river in 35 years as India continues to pour water into the river.
After 35 years, the Sutlej River’s water level had hit a record 278,000 cusecs, according to interim Punjab Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi.
The Sutlej River was at a “extremely high flood level” at the Ganda Singh Wala point, according to the Flood Forecasting Division (FFD), and this perilous condition would not alter.
The Sutlej River near Sulemanki Headworks was predicted to reach a “high to very high flood level” over the course of the following 24 hours, it was stated.
The FFD added that a significant flood was expected to hit Islam Headworks.
