Friday at the White House, Vice President Joe Biden met with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in an effort to manage the deteriorating state of US-Chinese relations.

Biden “emphasized that the United States and China need to manage competition in the relationship responsibly and maintain open lines of communication” during their meeting behind closed doors. He stressed the importance of cooperation between the United States and China in dealing with international issues.
In a statement, the White House said, “President Biden expressed his condolences on the passing of former Premier Li Keqiang,” alluding to Li’s death on Friday from an unexpected heart attack, as reported by official media.
The world is in turmoil, with severe wars erupting in Ukraine and the Middle East and China and the United States sometimes finding themselves on opposite sides about what form any ultimate peace should take, so the visit comes at an awkward time.
