ISLAMABAD: On the occasion of Eidul Fitr, President Dr. Arif Alvi reduced the sentences of 129 convicts and ordered their release from jails in Punjab.

The president’s executive amnesty freed 2,610 inmates. A total of 415 inmates at Rawalpindi’s Adiala Central Jail had their sentences shortened, and 39 inmates were freed.

Article 45 of the Constitution states that the president has the “power to grant pardon, reprieve and respite, and to remit, suspend or commute any sentence passed by any court, tribunal or other authority,” which Alvi cited as the basis for the reduction.

Sentences would not be reduced for inmates guilty of major offences including adultery, murder, espionage, anti-state activity, or terrorism. In addition, the remedy did not apply to offenders who stole money or otherwise harmed the government coffers.

Men over the age of 65 and women over the age of 60 who have already served one-third of their sentence were specifically mentioned in the statement as being eligible for the clemency.

Before the holiday of Eid, 231 inmates were released on bond.

Individuals under the age of 18 who have served one-third of their sentence will also be eligible for the reduction.

Seventy-five people awaiting trial are freed in time for Eid.

At least 75 detainees were freed from Adiala Central Jail on personal surety bonds by district and session judges from Rawalpindi and Islamabad courts and civil justices.

Prisoners’ complaints were reportedly addressed by the judges after they saw the cells, dining halls, and other facilities.

It was reported that all inmates who had been freed for minor offences will spend Eidul Fitr with their family.
