Hira Khan is a bright young lady with an affable disposition. Beautiful and talented, she is one of the new generation of make-up artists who subscribe to the ‘less is more’ philosophy and are not heavy-handed with products and application. She makes it a point to stay abreast of the latest beauty trends, and, going through her work portfolio, one notes that her signature look is naturally glamorous, creative and harmonious.
In person, Hira Khan is articulate and impeccably groomed. She works out of her salons based in Lahore, and is fast making a niche for herself as one of the top make-up artists in town.

Who is Hira Khan?
HIRA KHAN: I am a make-up artist, beauty educator, and professional colourist. I own Hira Khan Make-up Studio & Salon located in DHA and Cavalry Ground, Lahore.

Tell us about your education. Where did you attend school and college?
HK: I attended school at Lahore Grammar School Defence, and for graduation I went to the Lahore School of Economics where I did my major in Marketing and minor in Media Studies.

What is a typical day like for you?
HK: A typical day would be waking up, having breakfast, getting myself and my daughter ready. Checking up on the schedule for both my salons and heading to work accordingly; coming back home in the evening and having some relaxing TV time along with dinner with my husband.

How did you foray into the beauty industry and begin your career as a make-up artist?
HK: I decided to pursue my passion for make-up during my third year in college. I started taking make-up appointments from home in my last year of college and got a great response. That led me to take up professional make-up training from colleges in the USA and Dubai after I graduated from college in Lahore. After a year of practicing make-up artistry I developed an interest in hair colouring and decided to undertake training at Toni&Guy Academy and L’Oréal Professional Academy for hair colouring.
As I planned to enter the salon business I studied skin-related services and undertook training with well known skin care brands as well.

What do you think distinguishes Hira Khan Studio and Salon from the plethora of salons in Lahore?
HK: I think the fact that our customers hold a very special place in our heart and we value their feedback the most. The quality of services and experience we provide to make sure our client feels at home and comfortable throughout. Plus the fact that we are always open to constructive criticism and work on it.

What are some of the cutting-edge, innovative beauty and hair treatments you have introduced at your salon?
HK: We have our famous ‘Wonder Glow Facial’ which suits most skin types and is also budget-friendly, especially for school and college going females. We have the famous Moisture Splurge treatment for split ends and damaged hair. Our cling film mani-pedi is ultra hydrating for hands and feet, and is also quite popular.

Are you very hands-on with your work?
HK: For sure! I’m a perfectionist when it comes to work. I can’t seem to rest if things don’t go according to plan!

What is your area of expertise?
HK: My area of expertise is make-up and hair colouring.

How many brides do you cater to during the wedding season? And how do you give every bride a different look?
HK: I try to cater to my maximum capacity while making sure I don’t take up too many brides a day. I give my best to each bride as I feel they all deserve equal attention and effort on their special day. The look I decide to give each bride depends on the bride’s individual features, skin tone, outfit and preferences. So it varies and I make sure I listen to what the bride herself wants. It is important for me to make sure she heads out happy!

Which international make-up artists do you look up to?
HK: I look up to Mario Dedivanovic, his story is inspiring. I also like Lisa Eldridge, Hung Vanngo, Alex Box, and Charlotte Tilbury.

How would you describe your personal style? What are some of your wardrobe staples?
HK: My personal style would be something that I feel comfortable in yet is stylish and chic. My wardrobe staples include a handbag which fits all my daily belongings, a stylish top (preferably button down) and nicely fitted pants along with comfortable yet stylish sandals.

What are your top five must-have beauty products?
HK: 1. Charlotte Tilbury Magic Cream
2. Dior Pump N Volume Mascara
3. Mac Eyebrow Sculpt Pencil
4. Nars Blush
5. Becca Backlight Primer

Tell us about your personal health and beauty regime.
HK: My aim is to stay fit rather than just be skinny. I make sure I don’t miss out on fresh juices in the morning or detox water, and have my supplements regularly. My beauty regime includes a strict CTM (Cleanse, Tones, Moisturise) everyday, making sure I never sleep with make-up and keeping my skin well hydrated and toned at all times.

How do you sum up where you are in your career right now? And what are your plans for the future?
HK: I would say I have come a long way from where I started Alhamdulillah. But I still have plenty of future plans and a lot to cover. I am halfway through and plan to expand my work further and improve in areas where I feel it is required. Further expansion is definitely on my bucket list!
