PESHAWAR: On Monday, five laborers from Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa’s Shangla district perished in two different mine-related accidents.

An explosion at a coal mine in the Hangu district last evening claimed the lives of four laborers who were employed there. After being buried by the weighty debris, they perished. Suffocation claimed the life of a second miner in Swat’s emerald mine.

All five of the dead laborers had made it back to their hometowns in Shangla.

More than half of Shangla’s labor force was employed in the mining sector, according to a poll done by a local non-governmental organization. The report also stated that over 1,000 workers have been hurt so far, with some of them suffering lifelong paralysis and catastrophic injuries.

The community has pushed the government to provide appropriate guidelines for mine employees so that deadly accidents won’t happen again and they may work in peace.
