On Tuesday, the Karachi Police Department announced the suspension of a constable seen on camera drinking beer in public and abusing a female pedestrian.
Constable Abdul Aziz is shown in a video that has gone viral on social media riding a motorcycle while in uniform. He approaches a neighboring beggar woman and, obviously inebriated, makes an aggressive offer of alcohol.
The woman walks away and the police officer chugs from the bottle of whiskey he was holding. He offers the woman a cigarette, and she accepts it before crossing over.
South Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Asad Raza took note of the viral video and suspended Constable Abdul Aziz pending the outcome of an internal investigation.
The police officer was assigned to the Aram Bagh station.
A station house officer (SHO) in Khanpur was removed from duty earlier this year after being seen on camera harassing and physically assaulting Hindu storeowners who were fulfilling food delivery orders during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.
Officer Kabil Bhayo was assaulted, and as a result, he had to arrest more than a dozen persons for breaking the Ramadan Ordinance.
Departmental action was taken against the offending SHO only after the Sindh Human Rights Commission became aware of the occurrence after footage of it was widely posted on social media.
