LAHORE: On Thursday, the Lahore High Court (LHC) heard a petition challenging the PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif’s purported role as the chairman of Punjab government meetings.

Mashkoor Hussain, the petitioner, said that Nawaz is neither the chief minister of Punjab nor a provincial minister. He also holds no other position in the province government, but he is in charge of provincial cabinet sessions.

The petitioner asked the court to forbid the former prime minister from serving as the chair of any future government gatherings.

A one-member bench chaired by Justice Muzamil Akhtar Shabir questioned the petitioner’s attorney on Thursday about whether Nawaz is authorized to make orders using his name and signature.

The attorney for the petitioner responded in the affirmative. “According to the official press release, Nawaz Sharif directed the provincial government to introduce electric motorbikes and operate underground trains.”

The judge asked for proof where Nawaz’s directions from the cabinet meeting were recorded.

“Show us official documents to confirm that it was a cabinet meeting,” he responded.

The legal representative contended that the news release and images originated from the Punjab government’s official website. But the petitioner was ordered by the court to produce official records attesting to Nawaz’s chairing of these formal sessions.
