Ali Zaidi, the leader of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), was turned over to the police in Karachi on Monday after a court there placed him on three-day physical detention in connection with a fraud case.

According to Express News, the PTI leader was brought before the judicial magistrate Malir in the city’s Malir court by the police.

During the course of the hearing, the officer in charge of the investigation noted that in accordance with the statute, the accused was produced before the court within twenty-four hours; hence, his request for physical remand ought to be granted.

The judge put off making a judgment regarding the police’s request for Zaidi to be held in bodily custody. In addition to this, the court said that it would defer its decision on the request to discharge Zaidi under Section 63 of the Criminal Code and that it would publish its decision on both motions at a later date.

Gandapur, a member of the PTI, has turned himself in to the police.

Later on, when it was time to announce the result, the court told Zaidi that his plea to be discharged under Section 63 of the Criminal Code had been denied and that he had been turned over to the police for a three-day remand.

On April 15, the former minister was taken into custody at the Sindh office of the party located in Karachi.

Imran Khan, a former prime minister and the current chairman of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), issued a vehement condemnation of the detention and described it as being part of a “London plan” in which former prime leader Nawaz Sharif was given promises that PTI would be crushed.

Zaidi is the most recent leader of the PTI to be taken into custody by law enforcement officials. Several other heavyweights from the party that was last in power have also been taken into custody.

PTI leader Ali Amin Gandapur was taken into custody earlier this month in the Dera Ismail Khan region of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa. The arrest took place outside of the courthouse.

Gandapur voluntarily turned himself in to the police outside of the DI Khan bench of the Peshawar High Court, where he was seeking bail in many cases, one of which involved charges of terrorism. Before he was taken into custody, Gandapur gave an interview to the media in which he denied having any prior knowledge of any FIRs and said that he was being detained for no apparent reason.
