ISLAMABAD: On Saturday, a district and sessions court in Islamabad made the decision to indict Sheikh Rashid, the leader of the Awami Muslim League (AML), in the case involving his accusations that Asif Ali Zardari, the co-chair of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), had conspired to assassinate PTI leader Imran Khan.

The AML chief was the target of a challan brought by Islamabad Police, and Judicial Magistrate Umar Bashir set March 2 as the date for the indictment.

Rashid asked the court during the hearing for a date of March 15 because he needed to attend a conference. The court responded that the high court’s orders had already been issued and that they could not postpone the matter.

Judicial magistrate Bashir stated, “We will see when the trial starts.

In a related development, the judicial magistrate denied the AML chief’s request to file charges against Inspector Ashiq Manwar, SHO Ashfaq Waraich, and other police officers.

The SHO allegedly threatened that he had “come to teach the Rashid a lesson” in the petition.

“150 to 200 people, some in uniform and some not, broke down my door at 12:30 in the morning on February 2 and entered my home before arresting me without a warrant,” claimed Rashid.

The AML chief also noted in the application that the police left behind two armoured cars, 0.274 million, two mobile phones, two gift watches, and licenced weapons.

The judicial magistrate instructed the AML chief to submit the application to the court of a sessions judge after remarking that it is not within his purview to accept the application.

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) granted bail to the AML chief earlier this week in the case involving his accusations against PPP co-chair Asif Ali Zardari for allegedly plotting to kill the PTI leader.

Rashid’s post-arrest bail hearing was presided over by Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani, who also announced the reserved verdict and issued an order requiring the former interior minister to post surety bonds worth Rs50,000.
