Two cars of the Visakhapatnam-Rayagada passenger train derailed after the Visakhapatnam-Palasa Express service rear-ended it on Sunday. The mishap was caused by a broken overhead cable.

According to Nagalakshmi S., a senior government official in the district where the disaster occurred, the death toll has grown to 13, with an additional 39 people injured. More than 90 people were on board the two coaches that were rammed by the second train.

According to the preliminary investigation conducted by the railway ministry, the Visakhapatnam-Rayagada train was “overshot of signal” due to “human error.”

On Monday morning, a fire official in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh reported that nobody had abandoned the scene.

Months prior, 292 people had been murdered in the biggest train tragedy on India’s state-run railway system in 20 years.

New trains and updated stations are part of the $30 billion upgrade to India’s railway system, the world’s fourth-largest.
